The coaching staff of the Boston Celtics is rapidly becoming more experienced thanks to Brad Stevens.

Sam Cassell, a former Celtics player and assistant coach for the Philadelphia 76ers, has agreed to work with Joe Mazzulla as the head coach of Boston, Shams Charania of The Athletic reported on Sunday.

Cassell, 53, has been an assistant coach since 2009 and served as Doc Rivers’ primary assistant in Philadelphia for the previous three seasons. Before joining the Sixers in 2020, he spent six years with the Washington Wizards and six years with the Los Angeles Clippers as an assistant coach.

In his 15-year playing career, Cassell won three NBA titles, the most recent of which he won while playing for the Celtics in 2007–08. One of the most well-liked assistants in the league, the former point guard allegedly interviewed for the Houston Rockets head coaching position in April before Ime Udoka was chosen for the position.

After losing Damon Stoudamire in March, the Celtics were left without a coach with substantial NBA playing or head coaching experience in 2022–23. Cassell is a wonderful hire for them. Mazzulla, who is now the youngest head coach in the league at 34, would gain a lot from Cassell’s viewpoint because he has won championships and understands what it takes to succeed in Boston.

The organization will look to employ at least one assistant with “a lot of NBA experience,” as Stevens stated last week, and Cassell unquestionably qualifies.
