After reportedly taking a gun into Lawrence High School on Wednesday morning, a student is now facing various counts linked to firearms.

According to Lawrence Police, a pupil from the school contacted their parent to let them know that they had seen another student carrying a gun. When the parent dialed 911, the police and the school resource officers arrived right away and started looking for the suspect.

Authorities said that when a police officer tried to speak to the young suspect, he fled, leaving the campus.

The 14-year-old suspect was apprehended after a brief foot chase and will be charged with various firearm-related offenses as well as resisting arrest.

Police are of the opinion that the suspect never intended to use the firearm on anyone at the school.

Lawrence Police and Lawrence Public Schools are in “close collaboration” in order to ensure “a safe, healthy learning environment for the entire school community,” said a Lawrence Police spokesperson.

“Both parties will continue working together to implement the best available public safety practices in the interest of students, staff and families.”
