According to a spokesperson, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell was taken to the hospital on Wednesday after collapsing at a formal luncheon in Washington, D.C.

McConnell, 81, tripped and collapsed while attending a dinner at a hotel in Washington, said a spokesperson who spoke to CBS News and The Associated Press.

“This evening, Leader McConnell tripped at a local hotel during a private dinner,” David Popp, a spokesman for McConnell, said in a statement. “He has been admitted to the hospital where he is receiving treatment.”

In the Senate for his seventh term is McConnell (R-Ky.). As per the NBC News, he was elected in 1985 and served as Senate floor leader from 2015 until January 2021.

The news source gave no additional information on his health or the incident.

According to the AP, lawmakers are 65 years old on average this year.

McConnell injured his shoulder after falling outside his Louisville, Kentucky, home in 2019.

The third senator to obtain medical attention in the past month is McConnell.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) was admitted to the hospital on March 2 with shingles, according to a spokeswoman.

Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.), who had a stroke while running for the Senate the previous year, was supposed to stay out of the spotlight while getting treatment for clinical depression.
