Early on Tuesday, a raging fire broke out at a million-dollar house on a hill in a crowded area of Medford. Firefighters from various communities battled the blaze valiantly.

According to the Medford Fire Department, crews responding to a report of a fire at 44 Terrace Road around one in the morning discovered flames shooting from a vacant home that has been undertaking significant renovations for about a year.

Crews battled the raging fire for more than five hours, as seen on video from the site. For kilometers, one could see the dense black smoke.

The fire was put out by sunrise, but Medford Fire Chief John Freedman reported that his department had trouble getting engines up the slope and with water pressure.

“Up here on the hill, every foot of elevation you draw pressure losses,” Freedman said. “They’re flowing a lot of water and that puts strain on the systems.”

According to property documents, the house was bought in April 2021 for $1.35 million. The severely burned building now looks to be completely destroyed.

The fire was contained by the crews before it could travel to nearby residences.

Firefighters were not reportedly injured.

The fire’s origin is being looked into.
