Today is the start of the rape trial for a local lawyer who was once listed as one of People magazine’s top 50 bachelors. He has been accused in numerous more instances that are comparable, but he has never been found guilty.
Former Suffolk and Essex County prosecutor Gary Zerola is now a defense lawyer. He is now a defendant in his own case, and today’s opening arguments are scheduled to begin in a courtroom at Suffolk Superior Court.
Zerola, 51, pleaded not guilty to two rape accusations that were made against him by a woman who was 23 at the time. She reportedly told police that she woke up to find Zerola abusing her in Zerola’s friend’s apartment in 2016 after a night of drinking with pals in the North End. However, Zerola’s lawyer calls the accusations, quote, “thin.”
The accusation against Zerola for sexual assaulting women is not new. His first rape accusations came from two different women in 2008, but there was insufficient evidence to convict him on either charge.
Zerola could spend the rest of his life behind bars if found guilty of the two rape accusations he is now on trial for.
