The Justice Department is currently conducting an investigation on the Worcester Police Department on the suspicion discrimination based on race and gender.

The investigation spurred due to patterns of using excessive force and the discriminatory allegations.

The department’s procedures and training will be looked into by the U.S Attorney’s Office to see if there is a pattern of issues.

Also being looked at will be Worcester Police’s system of accountability, which is how they treat and punish evidence of misconduct.

Not all officers are at fault in the department though. “I am well aware that the overwhelming majority of officers serve and do their jobs with honor, pride, restraint and distinction,” said United States Attorney Rachael S. Rollins.

The investigation falls under the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994, which is about protecting every citizens citizens’ constitutional rights when dealing with law enforcement.

Another police department that was subject to an investigation like this is the Springfield Police Department. Their investigation was held in 2018 and the Attorney’s Office found issues with use of force and poor record-keeping, and many other problems.
