Early on Thursday morning, firefighters in Newburyport responded to a building explosion. At Seqens, a pharmaceutical manufacturing plant located at 9 Opportunity Way, they reacted. Five employees were present in the facility, according to the fire department. Four employees who were taken by ambulance to the hospital have recovered and been released. A fifth employee is still missing.

The incident reportedly took place shortly after 12:45 on Thursday morning, according to Newburyport Fire. The explosion caused an industrial-sized vat to move roughly 30 feet from inside the building, where it was initially located, according to fire crews, and land in an adjacent parking lot. Firefighters and rescue teams are unable to enter the structure due to severe structural damage.

Although the police department is requesting that employees of this industrial park stay away from Opportunity Way while crews are still on the scene, the fire department claims that there is no danger to the local residents.

A number of explosions took place in this same building in February 2020. There were several explosions at PCI Synthesis. There were no injuries mentioned in that occurrence.
