A hefty bail amount has been set for a man accused in connection with a fatal hit-and-run accident that occurred on a roadway in West Bridgewater earlier this week.
After turning himself in to Massachusetts State Police, Juan Leonardo Parra Altamirano, 33, of Brockton, was charged with leaving the scene of a crash that resulted in death, leaving the scene of a crash that resulted in personal injury, and leaving the scene of a crash that resulted in property damage.
According to Massachusetts State Police, Parra Altamirano’s 2008 Toyota Scion clipped a 2015 Honda Accord as he changed lanes on Route 24 late Monday night, sending the Honda hurtling into a concrete barrier in the median. The back of the Honda was struck by another vehicle, which caused it to take fire.
Erpharo Gilbert, the Honda’s 46-year-old driver, was pronounced dead at the site. Both her friends and neighbors adored her.
Gilbert, a Raynham native, was killed while traveling to a Boston hospital for a nighttime shift.
According to the prosecution, Parra Altamirano admitted to fleeing the scene of the collision because he was concerned about his immigration status and was undocumented.
