Colombian soccer player Andres Balanta died on Tuesday after collapsing while training with Argentina first division club Atletico Tucuman, according to officials.
The midfielder, who was only 22, collapsed during his team’s first practice session after the break. Balanta was then taken to a hospital located in San Miguel de Tucuman where he eventually died after 40 minutes of resuscitation attempts.
Atletico Tucuman officer Ignacio Golobisky gave a statement to the media saying “We regret to inform you about the death of Andres Balanta. The club’s supporters are deeply saddened today. Of course, we support his family, teammates and friends.”
Balanta started his career with Atletico in July of 2021 from the club where he started his soccer journey Deportivo Cali.
He played with Colombia’s national team in the 2019 Under-20 World Cup in Indonesia.
“The Colombian Football Federation regrets the death of Andres Balanta,” the Colombian federation said on its official Twitter account.
“Player of the Colombia national team in its different divisions.”
