Early on Friday morning, a raging fire tore through a collection of Lawrence businesses, destroying a bakery and a liquor shop.
Firefighters who were dispatched to the area of Essex and Newbury streets in response to a report of a fire discovered flames flying from a building that houses several businesses and dense smoke filling the neighborhood.
Firefighters from Lawrence and nearby towns could be seen using water to put out the blazing flames.
Sweeney’s Package Store and Sweet Grace Heavenly Cakes sustained significant damage, as seen in video from the incident. They have been classified as a total loss.
Because of the structure’s age, fire authorities claimed that the businesses lacked functional sprinklers.

Before 6:30 a.m., the majority of the fire was put out, but as the sun rose, crews were still fighting hot spots.
It’s unclear if the incident caused any injuries.
